Optimal Brushing And Flossing

Brushing and flossing is the most important part of your daily home hygiene. However, even more significant is ensuring you are doing your best. For optimal results, consider the following guidelines:

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid damage to your teeth.
Make sure your angle your brush at an approximate 45-degree angle against your gums – brush your gumline and all accessible surfaces of your teeth.
Remember to brush your tongue to remove additional bacteria.
    Choose fluoride toothpaste.
Replace your toothbrush with a new one once every three to four months.
Slide dental floss between two teeth and bend the floss to one side and then to the other, forming a C-shape – floss beneath your gumline, along your tooth.

Say “No” To Sodas

Soda is a major contributor to tooth decay. When the sugar in your soda mixes with the bacteria in your mouth, you create a highly acidic environment, which may eat away at your teeth. In addition, the acidity of diet drinks creates a similar scenario. This may cause weakening of your teeth’s outer layer, called enamel, and may result in cavity formation. However, if you choose to drink a soda, consider the following tips:

Use a straw to protect your teeth from exposure.

Rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth after drinking a soda to remove sugar and acid.

If you feel thirsty, reach for water, which is good for your teeth and, unlike soda, offers wonderful hydration.

Avoiding sodas is a wonderful step toward preventing tooth decay. However, many other drinks and foods contain sugar, like candy and fruit drinks. Dr. Roberson suggests avoiding cane sugar and incorporating a natural sugar alcohol sweetener called xylitol into your daily life. This sweetener actually protects your teeth by reducing dental plaque. If you have a sweet-tooth moment, consider xylitol-sweetened gum or candy to satisfy your craving, while improving your oral health.
