What Happens During My Cleaning?

As part of your general hygiene routine, you need to see your dentist for the occasional dental cleaning. A routine procedure, this can help protect your smile from serious complications, from tooth decay to gum disease. What happens during your cleaning and what can our Independence, MO patients expect from the procedure?

Removing Plaque Buildup

Over time, bacteria will break down the food particles trapped on or between your teeth. This process increases oral acidity and leads to a bacterial byproduct coating the teeth, known as plaque. The buildup can eventually weaken tooth enamel and inflame gum tissue, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and even gum disease. In order to keep your smile healthy and functional, we need to regularly remove plaque from the surface of your teeth.

During a cleaning, we use either a manual tool or an ultrasonic scaler to completely remove the buildup from the teeth. As a result, your smile is healthier, your teeth feel smoother, and your smile appears brighter. You can also enjoy fresher breath.

Caring for Your Smile From Home

While brushing and flossing cannot remove plaque, they can limit how much forms on the teeth in between your cleaning visits. So, we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session and flossing every night before bed. You should also cut back on sugary foods and drinks and avoid smoking and other tobacco products. Taking care of your smile can help protect your oral health.

How Often Do You Schedule a Visit?

On average, patients need to have a dental cleaning once every six months. However, if you have high risk factors for gum disease, we may suggest on every three to four months.
