Removing Teeth Stains With Professional Whitening

Instead of relying on toothpastes that contain abrasive agents (potentially damaging teeth) or strips that offer short-term results, consider talking to your Independence dentist about professional teeth whitening. We want to help our Independence, MO, residents enjoy professional results that last for several months. How do we remove discoloration with our professional whitening options?

In-Office and At-Home Whitening

We actually have two different options available for addressing discoloration. The first addresses most surface stains and actually removes discoloration in about one to two hours. The in-office procedure begins with the patient wearing a protective covering over the lips and gums. We then place a powerful bleaching gel onto the teeth. Using a special light, we activate the bleaching gel, which breaks up the stains and brightens teeth by several shades. To address surface stains and minor intrinsic stains (also known as permanent discoloration) we may recommend our at-home option. You come to the office only so we can create a set of trays. We will send you home with the custom-made trays and a bleaching gel. Each day, you fill the trays with gel and wear them for about a half hour to 45 minutes a day, over the course of one to two weeks. You then enjoy a significantly brighter smile!

Masking Permanent Teeth Stains

We briefly touched on permanent teeth stains above. Intrinsic stains don’t form on the surface. Instead, they occur in the dentin and may be caused by injury to the teeth, fluorosis, or tetracycline use at a young age. If these stains are too severe for teeth whitening, then we may suggest masking them. Using dental bonding, lifelike porcelain veneers, or a combination of the two, we will mask these stains and help you enjoy a bright and beautiful smile.

Good Habits for Brighter Smiles

Following treatment, what steps can you take to ensure your new results last? First, remember that you can keep the trays and any leftover gel for touch ups down the road. Next, be sure you’re brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing nightly to control plaque buildup and keep smiles bright. We also suggest you avoid smoking, cut back on drinks with dark pigments (coffee, tea, soda, and red wine), and see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning.
