Now that summer is here and restrictions in our Independence, MO, community are starting to lift, people are heading outside. If you would like to make sure your smile looks its best, then you may need to tackle your teeth stains. In today’s blog, we’re looking at how professional teeth whitening can offer long-lasting and stunning results!
The Factors Behind Your Teeth Stains
Why do our smiles become so stained over time? Well, the factors behind discoloration often include our daily habits. For example, foods and drinks high in sugar promote plaque buildup, which makes discoloration more visible. When we smoke or use other tobacco products, this also discolors the teeth too. Beverages with dark pigments and tannins, like tea, coffee, red wine, and soda, also discolor the teeth as well. Finally, lack of proper daily hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing, could impact our oral health and esthetics too!
Two Choices for Brighter Smiles
We have two very different options for removing these stains, and the one we recommend will depend on the cause and extent of your discoloration, as well as other factors. The in-office solution provides results in about one to two hours. We apply a bleaching gel to the teeth and activate it with a curing light, repeating the process to brighten the smile in a single sitting. For more substantial results and a reduced risk of tooth sensitivity, we may send you home with a custom-made set of plastic trays and a bleaching gel. The trays will be filled with gel and worn for about 30 to 45 minutes a day. After a week to ten days, your smile could be brightened by multiple shades, offering significant results.
Addressing Intrinsic Discoloration
Most stains form on the surfaces, the result of daily habits or the foods and drinks we consume. However, some form underneath the enamel and may be difficult for whitening to remove. These are known as intrinsic teeth stains, or permanent discoloration. To address them, we may mask them using dental bonding or lifelike porcelain veneers, a combination of the two. These issues not only address the shade of your smile, but correct problems with a tooth’s shape as well!
