We’ve been taking a look at our cosmetic procedures lately, with our previous blog focusing on teeth whitening. But what if a tooth is damaged or misshapen? We have cosmetic procedures that can help repair teeth, often in just one visit! How will bonding and contouring improve your smile?
Dental bonding involves placing composite resin, the same material we use for metal-free, tooth-colored fillings, onto the tooth to address chips, mask permanent teeth stains, or address surface issues. We first clean the tooth and gently etch the surface, which helps the material adhere to the tooth throughout the bonding process. We then apply the material in several different layers. We can actually shade the composite resin to ensure it blends with the tooth. After placing the material, we shape the tooth as it cures under a light. Finally, we polish the tooth to ensure a more natural appearance. We can address a variety of common esthetic complains in a single visit!
Contouring involves gently buffing away a small amount of surface structure. We can use this procedure to remove any pits or grooves in the tooth’s surface, reshape malformed or slightly damaged teeth, or dull teeth that are overly pointed. As with bonding, the entire procedure only takes one visit and in fact, we often perform both in the same sitting.
The Dangers of a Damaged Tooth
What makes repairing a chipped or daggered tooth so essential? When we have damage, this compromises the protective layer of tooth enamel. Soon, bacteria can potentially bypass the enamel and reach the inner dentin, causing tooth decay and eventually, an infection. Treating the problem helps protect the tooth and ensure a more esthetically pleasing smile.
