Who doesn’t love Halloween? Nearly all of us enjoy the costumes, scary movies, and of course, the free candy! However, as dental professionals we also know that all that free candy increases the risk of tooth decay. Fortunately, we have a few tips for keeping little smiles in Independence, MO, free of tooth decay.
Offer Candy Alternatives and Limit Consumption!
If you’re the one handing out treats to the neighborhood children, you don’t have to offer candy. Instead, try stickers, temporary tattoos, glowsticks, or small toys (party favors are inexpensive and can be bought in bulk). When your children bring in their haul, limit how much they can consume each day. Also, encourage them to wash down their sweets with a glass of water, which helps cleanse the smile. You also have the option of “buying” excess candy for a few dollars, or letting your kids exchange them for a small toy.
Brush and Floss Daily (and Correctly)
Nothing helps prevent cavities better than proper homecare. Children of all ages should be brushing their teeth twice a day, for two minutes each time, and flossing every night before bed. We recommend monitoring your younger children, or even assisting them, to ensure they clean their teeth correctly. Doing so helps remove food particles and reduce the risk of cavities.
Checkups and Cleanings
Schedule a checkup and cleaning after Halloween. We will look for possible indicators of tooth decay and recommend treatment to prevent the issue from growing worse. A cleaning then removes all plaque and tartar, protecting the teeth and gums alike. If you schedule a fall visit, you have a chance to use your 2018 dental insurance benefits or your flex spending account funds before they expire at the end of December.
