Cosmetic dentistry helps our Independence, MO, patients enjoy brighter smiles, and we can use these treatments to address a number of different esthetic issues. In today’s blog, your dentist will discuss how we use bonding and contouring to offer lifelike repairs in just one visit, addressing issues with discoloration, damage, and the shape of the tooth!
The Dental Bonding Procedure
Did you know we use the same metal-free material employed in our tooth-colored dental fillings? Composite resin is a special blend of quartz and acrylic compounds which we can shade to match the color of tooth structure. For teeth in need of repair, we remove any decay and clean the tooth. We then etch the surface and apply the material in several layers. As we cure the composite resin under a light, your dentist can sculpt your tooth. The final step is polishing which ensures a more natural appearance. In one visit, we can repair minor chips and cracks, lengthen worn down teeth, and close gaps between the teeth. Our team can also mask permanent teeth stains. Known as intrinsic discoloration, these stains form beneath the outer enamel and could be resistant to traditional teeth whitening options. Fortunately, this option masks them instantly!
Dental contouring is an entirely different approach. Instead of adding a special material to the tooth, we correct cosmetic issues by gently buffing and sanding the tooth. In a single visit, often the same visit as a bonding treatment, we can correct minor damage, dull overly pointed/sharp teeth, and even smooth pits and grooves in the tooth surface.
Other Cosmetic Options
Both bonding and contouring can be completed in one visit. However, we can also combine these treatments with others to help transform the smile. For example, we could place veneers, which alter the shape and color of the teeth and mimic dental enamel, on the front teeth and reserve bonding for the sides and rear teeth. We can also whiten teeth prior to treatment. Our team will thoroughly examine your smile and discuss your hopes and goals. We can then create a personalized treatment plan to help to achieve the smile you’ve always dreamed of.
