A New Season, A New Smile

With fall here, now is the chance to enjoy fun community events and festivals, and take in the cooler weather. Now is also a chance to see your Independence, MO, dentist about cosmetic dentistry. With our professional teeth whitening systems, we can help you enjoy a brighter smile. Which option will be right for you? How do we remove discoloration?

Why Do Stains Develop?

Stains form on our teeth for a number of different reasons. For example, when we consume drinks with dark pigments, such as coffee, red wine, tea, and soda, this could cause discoloration. Poor oral hygiene could mean plaque buildup and more apparent discoloration too. Smoking and tobacco use could stain teeth as well. As part of your treatment, we will identify the cause and severity of your stains and recommend one of our professional teeth whitening solutions.

Two Teeth Whitening Choices

We have two very different options available. If you need results quickly, we may suggest the in-office procedure. The patient comes in and we place a protective covering over the lips and gums. We then apply the powerful bleaching gel, which begins to break up discoloration when exposed to a special light. The process takes about two hours and can significantly brighten smiles.

For those with more severe staining, and who want to avoid the risk of tooth sensitivity, we may opt for our home-based treatment. The patient comes into the office briefly so we can take impressions of the teeth and create a set of plastic trays. We send the patient come with the trays and a powerful bleaching gel. The gel is placed into the trays and the trays will be worn for about 30 to 45 minutes each day. The trays help spread the gel evenly across the teeth and hold it on the smile, breaking up stains. For some, smiles could be brightened by several shades in as little as a week to ten days.

How Do I Make My Results Last?

To ensure your results last for many months to come, try to cut back on dark pigmented drinks and sugar and starchy foods. Make time to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes, and to floss before going to bed. See us every six months for a checkup and cleaning. During the cleaning portion, we brighten the smile by removing the layers of plaque buildup from the surface of the teeth.
