Next week we start a brand-new year! With that in mind, have you chosen a resolution? If not, why not consider a resolution to improve your smile’s health? With the right actions, our Independence, MO, patients can keep their smiles healthy all year round.
Proper Brushing and Flossing
You need to brush and floss daily. When you do, you remove food particles that bacteria would break down, a process that causes plaque buildup and an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease. You should brush your teeth when you wake up and once more before going to bed. Each session should take about two minutes. We also suggest picking a toothbrush, whether manual or electric, with soft bristles. Toothpaste should contain fluoride and have the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance on the packaging.
You should floss before bed, moving up and down the length of each tooth and dipping under the gum line in a “c” motion. If possible, we also suggest trying to floss after every meal.
Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks
Sugary and starchy foods leave behind particles for bacteria to break down. Likewise, certain beverages, such as soda, energy drinks, and sports drinks, contain a lot of sugar and harmful acidic levels. Opting for healthy snacks, such as fresh fruits and veggies, and water, helps protect your teeth from cavities and other serious oral health concerns.
Exams and Dental Cleanings
You should see us every six months for a checkup and cleaning, which allows us to remove plaque and monitor your smile for the possible warning signs of common oral health issues. Be sure to schedule a visit now for the New Year, so we can help you enjoy a healthier smile in 2019.
